Hamilton Re Interns Complete 10-Week Programme
Hamilton, Bermuda, August 27, 2018—Hamilton Re, the Bermuda-based insurance and reinsurance platform for Hamilton Insurance Group, today announced that their 2018 summer interns, Tomisha Goater and Amon Wedderburn, have completed a ten-week programme that offered insight into Hamilton Re’s diversified book of business and accelerated IT vision.
Since the beginning of June, Ms. Goater and Mr. Wedderburn have rotated through the cross-functional teams at Hamilton Re, spending time in catastrophe modelling, actuarial science, business intelligence, and direct and facultative reinsurance.
Susan Smith, VP Catastrophe Modelling and coordinator of Hamilton Re’s internship programme, said that both students displayed an impressive aptitude for efficiency throughout their time at Hamilton Re, which culminated in a final project on workplace organization and a presentation to CEO Kathleen Reardon and other company executives.
This is the third year that Hamilton Re has offered its popular internship programme. The initiative is a part of Hamilton’s ongoing commitment to attract Bermudians to the insurance and reinsurance industry. This summer was Ms. Goater’s second Hamilton internship.
“Since interning with Hamilton last summer, I have seen many things become more efficient, which shows that everyone is working towards the mission,” she said. “With the rotational programme, we are able to see more of the departments.
“The best part about the programme is that we are given hands-on work that challenges us.”
Mr. Wedderburn was struck by the fresh ideas he observed.
“To me, Hamilton Re is always one step ahead when it comes to technology and innovation,” he said. “The internship definitely presents challenges on a day-to-day basis that encourage you to live the Hamilton first principles and ‘Be More.’
“In addition to this, Hamilton has developed a diversity and inclusion platform that pushes the office to have an even more socially comfortable environment.”
When asked to describe their experiences at Hamilton Re, both students noted that it’s an exciting place to grow.
“It is fun to work at Hamilton because even as interns we are encouraged to make decisions and to be ourselves,” said Ms. Goater.
Mr. Wedderburn had the same view: “Without hesitation, I would return to learn and be pushed even further than I have been already.”
Ms. Goater graduated from the University of Florida this spring with a bachelor of arts in economics and a double minor in business administration and communication studies. She is currently studying for her Associate in Reinsurance (ARe) designation and hopes to enter the industry as a fulltime employee in the near future.
Mr. Wedderburn is currently studying toward an undergraduate degree in risk management and insurance at St John’s University in New York. He is due to graduate in the spring of 2020 and also aims to pursue a career in the reinsurance sector.
